LEADERSHIP CONTEST MOVING AHEAD

Monday, 2nd November 2009

On Saturday October 31st four of the five candidates for the leadership of the UK Independence Party took part in a hustings meeting in Lyne village hall, south of Reading.

The candidates are Gerard Batten MEP, Lord Pearson of Rannoch, Mike Nattrass MEP, Nikki Sinclaire MEP and Alan Wood.

Around 150 members packed the hall. Each of the candidates was given ten minutes to make their pitch as to why members should vote for them as leader. There was then a question-and-answer session lasting one hour, based on written questions collected prior to the meeting.

Finally, the candidates were given two minutes each to sum up their candidacy.

You can see the presentations here :

This was the hustings meeting for the South East region. There are further meetings in London on 2nd November, Exeter on 4th November, Merseyside on 10th November, and Birmingham on 13th November.

Ballot papers are now being distributed (this is a one-member-one-vote straight democratic decision of the party membership). They must be received by 5pm on 26th November. The result will be announced on that day or possibly the following day.
