Jacqueline Jones with Nigel Farage, leader of the UKIP MEPs in the European Parliament
The following letter was sent recently by Jacqueline Jones, PPC for Wantage, to the Oxford Times :
Dear Sir,
The complaint by Dr. John Howell, Conservative M.P. for Henley that Friday General Election counts in the Oxford West and Abingdon, Henley and Wantage constituencies will damage democracy, is unconvincing.
His protestations would carry more weight if the Conservatives had not reneged on their promise to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. No-one in this country has had the opportunity to vote in a referendum on our relationship with the European Union since 1975, after Britain joined the then European Economic Community on 1st January, 1973. Thus there is a precedent for a post-treaty referendum.
If John Howell really is concerned about damage to our democracy, he should sign the UKIP petition for a referendum addressed to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the Conservative Party leader, David Cameron, the M.P. for Witney. I would be happy to send Mr. Howell a petition form, or he could sign on-line via the UKIP website. His support would be very welcome.
Yours faithfully,
Jacqueline Jones.
